How To Help A Senior Move

Posted on

If you have a loved one or friend who is a senior and is planning to move soon, there is a lot you can do to help. From helping to organize their belongings and decide what should stay or go, to helping them pack everything up, it helps to be there for them and get the process done more smoothly. Here are some ways to help a senior move.

Photograph The Interior of Their Home

One thing that many people forget to do is photographing the interior of a senior's home. The reason you do this is so you can set up their furniture and décor in the same way they had it before. If they are dealing with memory loss, they might not get it set up exactly how they want it. This can be very frustrating and emotional for them. Take pictures of how their furniture is set up, and get pictures of where their dishes are in cabinets and how figurines are spaced out on shelves. You can get their new home set up in the same manner, which helps them find their belongings and feel more comfortable in the new space.

Start Organizing Their Belongings

Some seniors are prone to keeping and bringing all their belongings with them, but if they are moving to a smaller home or an assisted living facility, this is simply not possible. Spend some time with them before packing begins to help them sort through all their personal belongings. Decide what should stay and what should go. Consider the size of their new home when you do the sorting. Talk with them about what items are most important to them. They might have some things they want to keep but which will go in a storage unit instead of going to their new home. Start organizing everything so it is easier to pack when the time comes.

Help Them Pack Early

Start arriving to the senior's home early to help them pack a little at a time. They might be tempted to pack on their own and then risk injuring themselves, so be sure they understand you and others are going to help. Start with areas of their home that they don't need, such as their china cabinet, junk drawer, and seasonal clothing. Begin packing each box at a time and labeling it properly for the movers. Move the boxes into a corner of each room that won't cause injury to the senior.

Hire Professional Movers

It is highly recommend that you hire professional movers for your friend or loved one. Unless you can gather a good amount of people who have large trucks for moving day, this is typically the best option. It keeps you and others from getting injured when trying to help them move.
